Ratio
Latin ratio — "reckoning, reason"
Ratio comes from Latin reri meaning "to reckon or think." Euclid formalised ratios in Elements Book V (~300 BCE). A ratio a:b compares two quantities of the same kind; proportion equates two ratios — a:b = c:d — forming the cornerstone of similarity, scaling and direct/inverse variation.
