Egyptians used unit fractions (1/n) only — a strange constraint that produced the Rhind Papyrus (1650 BCE). Indian mathematicians (Aryabhata, Brahmagupta) developed the modern p/q notation. The horizontal fraction bar appeared in Arabic texts around 1200 CE.
