P&C is the math behind cybersecurity, genetics, AI, and game design! 🔐
A 6-digit PIN with 10 digits (0-9) has 10⁶ = 1,000,000 possibilities — that's why it's secure. An 8-character password using uppercase + lowercase + digits + symbols? 94⁸ ≈ 6 quadrillion combinations. Brute-forcing that would take millions of years.
The key question to ask: "Does order matter?"
- YES → Permutation (nPr) — passwords, race positions, seat arrangements
- NO → Combination (nCr) — cricket teams, pizza toppings, friend groups
The relationship: nCr = nPr ÷ r! — you divide because combinations don't care about order, so you remove all r! duplicate arrangements.
Pascal's identity: nCr + nC(r−1) = (n+1)Cr — this builds Pascal's Triangle row by row. Every row sums to a power of 2. Elegant and powerful for exam shortcuts.
