Latin permutatio — "thorough exchange, change"

Permutation comes from Latin per (thoroughly) + mutare (to change). Combination from Latin combinare — to link together. The key distinction: permutations care about order (AB ≠ BA); combinations do not (AB = BA). Pascal's Triangle elegantly encodes all combinations.
