Babylonian tablets (~1800 BCE) solved quadratic equations. Greek mathematicians used geometry. Al-Khwarizmi (Baghdad, 9th century) gave algebra its name and modern step-by-step method. Variables (x, y, z) were standardised by René Descartes (1637).
