Arabic al-jabr — "the reunion of broken parts"
From Al-Khwarizmi's Al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wal-muqabala (~825 CE). Al-jabr means "restoration" — moving negative terms to the other side of an equation. The word "algorithm" also comes from his name.
