Babylonians (~3000 BCE) used base 60 (still in our 60-min, 360°). Indian mathematicians invented zero and place value (5th–7th century). The decimal system spread via Persian and Arab scholars to medieval Europe — Fibonacci's Liber Abaci (1202) was a key turning point.
