Interest

Latin interesse — "to be between, to concern"

Interest derives from Latin inter (between) + esse (to be) — originally meaning "that which is between" the principal lent and the amount returned. Medieval scholars translated the Arabic word riba (increase) using "interesse." Compound interest was called anatocism in Roman law.
