Decimals extend place-value notation past the decimal point. 0.527 = 5/10 + 2/100 + 7/1000 = 527/1000.
Operations: add/subtract by lining up decimal points; multiply by ignoring decimals then counting decimal places (0.4 × 0.3: ignore → 4×3=12, then 2 decimal places → 0.12); divide by shifting decimal points equally in both numbers.
Recurring decimals: 1/3 = 0.333… = 0.(3). Every fraction has either a terminating or repeating decimal.
