Tally marks on bones (~20,000 BCE) are the oldest known maths. Sumerians invented place-value (~3000 BCE). The Hindu-Arabic numerals (0–9) came from India around 500 CE and reached Europe via Al-Khwarizmi. Counting is the foundation of every other branch of mathematics.
